Lady Pirates Basketball season ends in Districts
The Polson Lady Pirates ended their season with a 15 point deficit against Libby in the District Tournament held in Whitefish, Montana. The six-team tournament is held to set seeding and determine which teams will advance to the Divisional tournament in Hamilton February 21 through 23. Polson lost their first game against Ronan 72-34. Alex Pierre led on the Polson team with seven points, Karly Lawson led close behind with six points.
In the loser-out game played against Libby, Alex Pierre also led this game with ten points scored. The Lady Pirates put up a good last fight against the Lady Loggers according to Senior Olivia Perez, “It was the most intense we’ve shown on defense all season, I hope the girls next year will continue to work as we did in that game.” The 15 point loss was a very big improvement compared to the 35 point loss a week before, “Imagine what improvement we would’ve had with another week to work and practice.”
The District Tournament was the last high school basketball games ever for half of the team with six seniors out of a total twelve players. This game ended the Lady Pirates season, but there are big hopes for the next one. “My hopes for next season are to win a game and to make it out of Districts and advance to Divisionals.” Sophomore Berkley Ellis remarks. Berkley played point guard for the Pirates.
Ending the season, the Lady Pirates didn’t win a game, but they still fought throughout each game, getting comments from fans and spectators on their hard work. The girls are already focused on the next time they can play basketball, “I’m excited to work and show people what we can do next season,” Berkley Ellis mentioned.
